Admission to Ararat Mental Hospital from Coleraine #267 "brought by Police - delusions - dangerous - is suicidal - is destructive". Johanna O’Donnell admitted to Ararat Mental Hospital on 13th March 1882 aged 45 sent by J. McConochie and A. Lesser. Medical certificate A. Mc Donald and J. Anderson 19th March 1882. Suffering from Melancholia - in fair bodily health - "thinks she is going to be killed - much trouble in getting her to take her food - 28th - better: takes her food well - 10th April: noisy - asking to be killed" - 8th May: very noisy, 20th - Imprisonment, 10th June: bodily health not very good and still excited - (comment about her diet).
Johanna died on 20th February 1883 from chronic disease of brain. Present at death Catherine Ahern. "In case of death Daniel Kane will bury his wife" (from written official records". She died after 9 months since being admitted. The coronial inquest results are also available at PROV (VPRS 24/PO unit 450, item 1883/230) and can be downloaded. I've also attached a copy of her admission papers from Ancestry.com . COULD IT BE THAT JOHANNA KANE HAD A TUMOUR ON THE BRAIN WHICH EXPLAINS HER ERRATIC BEHAVIOUR AND THE FACT THAT AFTER BEING ADMITTED TO THE ARARAT MENTAL INSTITUTION SHE DIED AFTER ONLY 9 MONTHS.
