Lived on the property of his father on Saltpan's Road called "Rockwater." (86 acres) 1908 Daniel (Snr) farmer, James (labourer), John (labourer), Patrick (labourer), Thomas (labourer), Edward (labourer) and Margaret (home duties) Salt Pans Rd, Daniel (blacksmith) and Catherine Kane Coleraine. They were on the Electoral Rolls in Coleraine. 1912 after Daniel (Snr) had died the farm at Salt Pans was shared by Edward (farmer), John (farmer), Thomas (farmer) and James (farmer) and home duties Margaret Kane. Ned eventually sold out when his father and sister died - he then moved to Coleraine. 1927-1938 Coffee Palace and agent. In the short space of 18 years the Kane family of 8 members residing at Salt Pans Rd in a large weatherboard house was reduced to 3 (Tom, Daniel and Ned). Daniel 1909 aged 70,Patrick 1909 age 28, John 1915 aged 41, James 1921 aged 47 and Margaret 1927 aged 51.

After the War he worked for General Motors Holden on the Assembly line at Fishermans bend - owing to ill health he had to resign. | ||

Ned played the piano at silent movies at Coleraine and played the clarinet in Coleraines first brass band. | ||

Ned was well known for the formation of the 'Silver fern orchestra' band. He was a singing member and organist at St. Joseph's church choir for many years. | ||

He was usually booked until 1 a.m. but often played until 2.30 a.m. | ||

He operated a music shop and billiard saloon in Coleraine in the premises now occupied by T.K. Brown for some time - IT WAS CALLED THE COFFEE PALACE. | ||

Ned always played free at Catholic balls and usually played all afternoon on Christmas Day | ||

Pat Deany had a sister Nelly (she never married). Ned was keen on her. She worked at the Railway Refreshment rooms - she was quite attractive. | ||

Ned saw the musical "Singerly" quite often. He had a crush on someone in the show. | ||

Ned had to shaparone Ann and Hanah (Doll and Flo). They wouldn't let him into the carriage of the train so he was next door. They went to the end of the line at Williamstown. When Ned checked if they were still there at each station. When he came back he said he would wash his hands of them so he was given the name of 'Pontius Pilate'. | ||

If the girls disliked someone they wore a big hat so they couldn't get too close. If they liked someone they wore a small hat. | ||

Ned was a very nice man - a thorough gentleman | ||

Ned loved his food - he often had a meal at Evestons | ||

Ned saw South Pacific 20 times. He was keen on the leading lady. | ||

At the end of his life he broke his leg and was in hospital for many months prior to his death - he celebrated his 80th birthday 2 weeks before his death. | ||

This card below was sent to Ned when his sister Margaret died in 1927. Jimmy Paez played drums in Ned's band - 'The Silver Fern Orchestra'. Jimmy was also a hairdresser in Coleraine. Jimmy's brothers were Raphael (see card below) and Billy Paez who played 7 games for St. Kilda in 1934 and kicked a solitary goal. The Paez family were close friends of Ned. | ||

Ned Kane used to also play the piano for the silent movies in Coleraine. In the swinging 1920's Ned owned a music shop which he sold pianos and Pianola’s and sheet music in Coleraine. His friend Jimmy Paez owned a Ladies and Gent's hairdressing business next door.. Together they both owned and operated a 'first class billiard parlour' as well.

Played all afternoon at Ballies on Christmas day.
Dolly was a singer and pianist
Ned once spoke Vin Kane's mother Catherine ‘Kitty' Gleeson . He told her that he had a sister and then burst into tears. Most likely he was referring to Margaret who died June 12 th 1927 aged 51. He would have been very close to her as she raised him up once his mother ‘cleared out'. Ned was about 40 when his half-sister Margaret died.
