bullet

Made and fitted metal rings for wagon wheels

bullet

Made a wagon for Jim - now at Ballies

bullet

Raced a horse 'Royal George' - taken to Tahara, Colac, Casterton: it wasn't much good.

bullet

Dan made hinges for the Coleraine saleyards.  He had the contract.  One of these is on the front gate at Ballies.

bullet

Dan was an excellent welder

bullet

Dan had an old Chev car.  He took Ballie, Grandpa Kane, Dolly and Grandma Eveston to Melbourne.  He was a shocking driver.  He had a prang in Melbourne - they were visiting Aunt Lizzie in North Carlton

bullet

Dan sometimes had a short fuse in the Blacksmith shop due to the heat.

bullet

Dan got on well with Mel Hutchins

bullet

Dan later got electric bellows but they shorted out with a bang

bullet

Dan smoked a cherry wood pipe - it was worn away from lighting it from the furnace fire.

(Need to check this information for accuracy and dates - added 1st Oct 2013)
bullet

Daniel Kane's children Margaret (Bubby), Thomas and Annie (Dolly)

bullet

Thomas married Catherine Gleeson from Rochester and they called her Kitty.  Worked in the Post Office and went to Melbourne with same line of work - eventually had their own shop.  He was a great sportsman - tennis, bowls and golf.  Vin was born in 1930 (married Pat and live in Canning St. Canberra)  and also John born 1928 who died around 2010.  In the early days they lived not far from Uncle Ned who used to visit them about once a week while living in Melbourne - somewhere near St. Kilda I think.  Ned was a very cultured person.  Interesting story told by Vin about his father and the 'pick the football in the photo' competition which changed their lives because of an indiscretion..

bullet

Below T. Kane (Tommy Kane) father of Vin and John.  He later gave a tennis racket to Vin who then took up tennis himself.

Daniel Kane probably came to Coleraine because Johanna O’Donnell’s brother T. O’Donnell had taken up the present property in Church St. where Dolly later lived in August 1862.  Daniel Kane then bought it from him in 1870.  Also, Johanna had a brother Patrick who was at the wedding in 1870.  I PRESUME THE FIRST HOUSE WHICH YOU CAN SEE FACING EAST WAS BUILT IN 1862 AND DANIEL KANE BUILT THE HOUSE FACING SOUTH IN 1870

·        Dolly Kane told me of the existence of the Deanys, otherwise we would have lost their side of the family and never been able to trace the village of Shanagolden in Limerick.  From John Keane 1868 birth certificate it showed he was from Shanagolden.

These are the 3 Blacksmiths in Coleraine in 1921 – Dan Kane (left), Cook (centre) and Kaine.  Dan Kane’s dog far right, 2 draught horses belong to Tom Bennett.

·        Daniel Kane, the blacksmith, gave a speech when Dad and Jack were 21.  He said they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth.  Also they got the 37 Chev for their 21st.

Dolly was doing the cooking at Kane’s once while Henry McKenry was doing the shearing.  Dolly had a falling out so Nora Kane who was then asked to take over and cook. Ballie said – “ We’re right now – mum has been put into the ruck.”

Dan Kane moved from his black smith shop in Coleraine eventually and then did some work at his home.  Bill Barnes remembers him as being pretty grumpy

·        Clem Murtagh was a jockey

·        Fr. O’Donnell said they were goats on the altar (referring to the horses).  Old Dan didn’t go to Mass for quite a while.

·        Ill feeling between the Murtaghs and the Kanes because James Kane didn’t ‘Will’ anything to them but to Jack and Dad because Nora was good to him.  (You wouldn't have thought so because John Kane (Gallipoli) gave all his paddocks to Daniel Kane (blacksmith).
