Obituary
In the ceaseless operations of the reaper, Death, another of our old and respected identities Mr. Daniel Kane, has passed for ever from us. Mr. Kane had not been suffering severely but felt sufficiently out of order to place himself in the doctors hands. He received treatment that his case called for, but the trouble remaining he was taken to Nurse Fitzgeralds hospital. Up to yesterday evening there appeared to be no close approach to death, but this morning at 2:30 after ringing for the nurse he lay back into his final repose. The cause of death lay in several internal derangements. Mr. Kane was a native of County Limerick Ireland and came out here about 40 years ago. He was a Shire Contractor and farmer in occupation and unostentatious and upright in all his dealings thereby winning general respect. He leaves 5 sons, 1 daughter for whom general sorrow is felt.
Funeral leaves his late residence Saltpans Road at 2:30 p.m. Friday

COMPARING COST OF LIVING IN 1909
Daniel Kane probably came out from Ireland with very little. He was illiterate in 1866 and signed his wedding certificate with a ‘X’ in 1870 but by his 2nd marriage to Mary Jane Stevens in 1885 he signed his own name. In his lifetime he had 6 sons and a daughter.
By the time of his death in 1909 after living in Australia for 43 years he had acquired a solid stone house in Church St Coleraine and a house and farm on the Tarrenlea Rd with gross assets of 3,786 Pounds which was enough to leave his sons and daughter in a sound financial position.
