Mum, Maureen

Grandma married approx 1918 at age 27

Charlie and May lived in Crimmins' old house located across the road from Henry McKenry parents home on the Tarrenlea Road.  It was here that Grandma lost her wedding ring.

Evestons new house built in 1928

Charlie's mum died in about 1930 and the original Eveston family home was then demolished.  Maureen was about 9 when 'gran' died.

Crimmins house was relocated to Evestons in 1930 where old Tom lived until his death in 1969.

In about 1935 Evestons house was extended to add a bathroom, 2 bedrooms and a verandah.  Before this work was done Maureen and mum used to sleep on the existing small verandah.

The original Eveston house was located near the underground brick well and the long part was parallel to the laneway.  Access to the house was via the laneway.  The kitchen was located at the end facing Kanes.

Clem Mahoney's parents lived in the McKenry's house for awhile and Clem dobbed in Grandma for cooking meat on Friday. (Auntie Sheila)

‘PIDDLING PETE'

Fred Heffernan was a stalwart of the Catholic Church in Coleraine for many years. Usually you'd see him giving out the bulletin each week as you entered for Mass. Sometimes he'd visit Tommy and Grandma on the farm at Tarrenlea and on one occasion there was a humorous incident. In Grandma's kitchen there was a freezer which lined the wall large enough to put a human body in. Fred had been chatting with Tommy in the kitchen and after awhile Grandma came in from the garden. She noticed that the freezer was once more leaking all over the floor and she drew Fred's attention to it. “Did you do that Fred?” she inquired. Fred blushed with embarrassment and puffed up like an adder. Upon telling me the story later, she chuckled and smiled coyly saying– “He didn't like my little joke.”
