The front room was always used as the guest room - all the best furniture was kept there : guests had the best room in the house.

The original house here was built by Dad around 1914,  and comprised of the two front rooms and this kitchen,  which we have added a panty to now.   Our sleeping quarters was the big room that would have gone right through from the passage to what is now the laundry.

Dad and Mum had a little room off that which is now part of the bathroom.   The front room was never used except when visitors come,   which most of the country homes had this special room for special occasions.

Where you John have your computer now,   that was a harness room for years and years.   It was unlined and all the horses  harness was kept in there,   not having any outbuildings.

That went on until 1928.   We were getting on,  and  wanted a proper bedroom,  so they turned the harness room into a nice bedroom,   and that catered for your father John,   Jack and I.     Then they put up a bathroom and a washhouse,  that was done in 1928.

Then they cut up that big room,   and pulled down where Mum and Dad were sleeping,   and they turned the end of that passageway into another bedroom that Mum and Dad had.

This portion nearest the passage was turned into another sitting room,   which always had a fireplace in it and that’s where we used to sit to listen to the test cricket back in the 30’s when they were playing over in England.

The reason they had a special room was they always wanted something nice,   where they could present them and bed them down in the best available.    It was always there for that purpose,  with the best of everything,  beds,  wardrobe,   they prided themselves that if people come,   well, they had the best room in the house as honoured guests.
