Towards
a future
Hi everyone,
Towards a future
We are well aware of Native American history. The fragmentation of their
society and their containment in reservations. Where incompatible groups,
living in close proximity, created tensions and disputes. Right now misuse
of drugs and suicide is distressingly high. Alcohol has really been
superceeded by the stronger 'trendier' drugs. Anger, resentment and
anti-social behaviour is a growing problem caused by dysfunctional families
and all the other associated reasons. This behaviour in the classroom is a
cry for help.
One of my fellow teachers worked in correctional institutions for 20 years
as a maths tutor. When the philosophy of that establishment was
rehabilitation, suicide attempts were rear. But when the policy was
changed
to punitive, it became almost a daily issue. The education system needs to
equip the students for life. It must begin where the students are at, and
be seen to be relevant to their lives. Counselling is a necessity and
anything which promotes a students self esteem is a good thing.
A sixteen year old female student came into my class today and said that
she would not work because she was sad. I said "Why is that
M.....?" "My
best friend died 2 years ago - this is her anniversary - we were the same
age." I said "Well, don't do maths today - would you like to
write a poem?"
(I was aware that she was gifted for poetry writing). She replied that she
would, and it was not long before she had written a page. She asked if she
could read it to me. I said: "Would you like to read it to the
class?"
"Yes - O.K." It was a very moving experience for all of us and
it left me
thinking about 'what is really important today.'
Everyone here is sensitive of the daily struggle in many of the students
lives. There is a dedicated, concerned group of adults striving to
understand and to make a difference. Helpful programs and structures are
already in place. Rather than be overwhelmed with the problems, a positive
outlook and a consistent, determination to help and guide the students is
required. To bring a little of the spirit of Christmas into their lives -
peace, joy and good will.
Wishing you a very happy Christimas for 2003,
Brian and Kate.
